Marcelino Evans

October 28, 1948 – April 18, 2026

Marcelino “Mars” Evans was born on October 28, 1948, in New York City to Edna (Lauder) Evans and Norman Evans. During his youth, he developed a love for fine arts and discovered basketball at the age of 14—a passion that would help shape the course of his life.

Through dedication and hard work both on and off the court, Mars earned acceptance to the University of Houston, where he played center for the Cougars basketball team. As a freshman, he made an immediate impact, breaking records previously held by Elvin Hayes. His talent led to a professional basketball career that was unfortunately cut short due to major knee injuries. With resilience and determination, Mars transitioned beyond the game, carrying its lessons of discipline, perseverance, and teamwork into every chapter of his life.

During his college years, Mars met his lifelong best friend, Barbara Seahorn, whom he later married. Together, they built a strong foundation rooted in family and love, raising their children—Kris, Kim, and Matt—in Houston, Texas. Mars was a dedicated father, mentor, and a guiding presence in his community. His greatest joy came from being a grandfather to Aiden, Ella, and Adeline, witnessing his legacy continue.

Mars enjoyed a distinguished career with Shell Oil Company for over 30 years before retiring. He was known for his knowledge, quick wit, and larger-than-life personality.

A lover of jazz, Mars volunteered at the New Orleans Jazz Festival and frequently returned to enjoy Mardi Gras, embracing the music, culture, and community. He truly never met a stranger and formed lasting connections wherever he went.

Mars was a faithful member of Windsor Village Church for over 20 years, where he found spiritual fulfillment and joy in fellowship and music. His faith remained a cornerstone of his life, especially during his health challenges.

Mars entered eternal rest on Saturday, April 18, 2026, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 77.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Edna Evans, and his brother, Robert Evans. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Barbara Evans; children, Kris, Kim, and Matt (Hailey); grandchildren, Aiden, Ella, and Adeline; and a host of extended family and dear friends.

Mars will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, faith, mentorship, resilience, and being “the life of the party.” His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched.

In his own words:

“Have a great day on purpose.”
