Curley Hypolite Jr.

March 30, 1936 – May 6, 2025

Curley Joseph Hypolite, Jr., 89, was born March 30, 1936 in Parks, Louisiana to the late Curley Hypolite, Sr. and Yolande (Wiltz) Hypolite. On May 6, 2025, the Lord was ready to receive him, and he peacefully transitioned to eternal glory at home in Houston, TX, with his family by his side.

Curley grew up in Parks, LA, the third oldest in a close-knit family of ten siblings. Growing up during the post-Great Depression era, he was only able to attain primary school education. At this young age, he began working in the fields and at the local sugar mill at a young age to help support the family until his father secured employment with the railroad. In Parks, Curley met, dated, and married his beloved Mae Audrey Durand Hypolite and shared almost 69 years together before her death in January 2025. After marrying, they made Houston, Texas their home and raised five children (Stephan “Tony,” Janice, Phyllis, Dwayne, and Denise) and grandchildren Damion and Crystal. Curley, aka “Curt,” worked for Weingarten’s grocery warehouse for over 25 years before becoming self-employed and driving his own 18-wheeler truck until retirement. He was a hard-working, dedicated husband, father, and grandfather who actively helped to raise and spoil his children and grandchildren.

Curley loved family gatherings with his siblings, both in Louisiana and Texas. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was a jokester who always had something to say that made others laugh and want to be around him. His claim to fame was being the best at cooking BBQ and canning figs. He also loved taking care of his lawn and listening to zydeco and blues music. Although he wasn’t the best dancer, he always gave it his best. He was a longstanding member for over 60 years of the Knights of Peter Claver, St John Council 53 in Parks, LA.

Curley bravely fought off prostate cancer but later succumbed to colon cancer. He cared for his wife with loving devotion during her lengthy illness. With the help of family and health care aides, Curley was able to remain in the comfort of his home, as he desired, until the Lord was ready to call him home. He said he was at peace and ready to go meet his people.

Left in God’s care to cherish Curley’s memory are sons: Stephan “Tony” Hypolite (Hilda), Darryl Wiltz, and Dwayne Hypolite (Cynthia); daughters: Janice Hypolite (Johnny Buchanan) and Denise Hypolite; 20 grandchildren: Damion Hypolite (Tosha), Liesel Shields-Ball, Crystal Wooten (Larry), Canan Hypolite, Roman Buchanan, Christopher Hypolite, Derek Hypolite, Cody Hypolite, Aeryana Hypolite, Minasian Hypolite, Brody Hypolite, Ameer Harland, Derolodi Taylor Jr, Logan Wagner, Aleshia Prophet, Brittany Hypolite, Matthew Zion Jr, Rashard Zion, Andre Zion, and Mary Zion; 11 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; loving brothers Clifton, Herbert, T-Roy, and Joseph and sisters Joyce Wilson and Barbara Joseph; sisters-in-law Mary Ellen, Sharian, and Mae Ola; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Curley was preceded in death by his parents Curley Hypolite, Sr. and Yolande Hypolite; wife Mae Audrey Durand Hypolite; daughter Phyllis Hypolite Taylor; brothers Rubin Hypolite, Sr. and Zerbin Hypolite, Sr.; sister Eva Hypolite; grandsons Nicholas Hypolite and Babatunde Okematti; and great-granddaughters Dasia Trevino and Jayla Taylor.
